To help parents with back-to-school clothes for kids, seven states and the District of Columbia all exempt certain goods from the sales tax for several days before the new school year begins. Maryland' s one of those states. Clothing and shoes costing less than $100 per item are tax free until the close of business today from the usual 5 percent sales tax. And it's much to the delight of shoppers.
