For almost 22 years, the Trans-Alaska pipeline has been moving crude oil from the North Slope of the state to the port of Valdez, hundreds of miles south. The oil fields that feed the pipeline were supposed to be exhausted by now, but technological improvements may keep oil flowing through the pipeline for decades. Many environmentalists worry that the structure is wearing out. Oil industry representatives say that the Alaska pipeline can keep functioning indefinitely with proper maintenance. NPR's John ...
