The mere mention of the Black Panther Party is a historical Rorschach
test for Americans. Different people see radically different images
in the history of the most controversial black rights group of the
1960s. To some, Huey Newton, Bobby Seale, Eldridge Cleaver and their
followers are seen as defiant freedom fighters. Yet to others, the
Black Panthers were a fiery gang of violent thugs who intimidated
people, dealt in drugs and engaged in crime.
