New malaria drug succeeds in animal tests

CHICAGO, Aug 29, 2001 (United Press International via COMTEX) -- Johns Hopkins University researchers said Wednesday a new malaria drug under development that is based on a herbal remedy easily passed the first stage of preclinical testing in mice and rats.

"Researchers at Walter Reed Hospital and we are on parallel paths of developing an antimalarial drug," said Gary Posner, Scowe professor of chemistry at the Krieger School of Arts and Sciences at Johns Hopkins in Baltimore, Md.

"Walter Reed is developing a drug from the Chinese plant artemisia, historically used by the Chinese as an herbal remedy for malaria. ...
