Thursday, August 30, 2001 -- Visiting New York Police Commissioner Bernard Kerik had not planned to be here right now. He was going to come after the High Holy Days, he said yesterday, but moved the trip up to "send a message to others who are leery of coming. You cannot be intimidated by terrorism."

The visit was at the invitation of Internal Security Minister Uzi Landau, who visited New York several months ago to learn what the police had done there to combat crime "so that we can improve our performance here."
