Fed: Reith announces patrol boat tender
CANBERRA, Sept 1 AAP - The federal government today moved to boost long term coastal
surveillance with the announcement of a tender process for the long-awaited patrol boat
replacement.
Defence Minister Peter Reith said the new vessels would replace the navy's 15 elderly
Fremantle class Patrol Boats with the first expected in service by late 2004.
The navy hasn't specified how many boats it wants but it's likely to be around the
same number of vessels.
Unlike traditional defence procurement deals, Defence is pursuing a private financing
