Film of the week: 'Rock Star'

LOS ANGELES, Sep 06, 2001 (United Press International via COMTEX) -- The first half of "Rock Star" is the most rousing Hollywood entertainment I've seen all year.

It is roughly a cross between the classic satire "This Is Spinal Tap" and last year's romanticized and excessively elegant "Almost Famous." The new Mark Wahlberg movie somehow convinced this middle-aged heavy metal music hater that, beneath all the stupidity, there was something glorious about metal in its prime.

Set in 1985, "Rock Star" was inspired by the true story of Tim "Ripper" Owens, an office supply salesman who was suddenly hired by heavy metal veterans ...
