(The Diamondback) (U-WIRE) COLLEGE PARK, Md. -- The Mid-American Conference is hardly a college football behemoth like its neighbor, the Big Ten. It has only one bowl tie-in and gets limited media exposure.
Yet nearly every year, teams from the league pull off a string of upsets of major-conference foes. Just last week, Toledo battered Minnesota and Bowling Green knocked off Missouri. Another MAC member, Ohio University, defeated Maryland, 21-14, to open the 1997 season.
Clearly, the MAC is anything but meek, and Terrapin football coach Ralph Friedgen hopes his Terrapins (1-0) don't become a victim to an upset again when they host Eastern Michigan ...
