The most complete study ever carried out on the world's coral reefs warns that many of these ''critical, valuable and beautiful ecosystems'' face extinction because of rising temperatures and human pressures. The ''World Atlas of Coral Reefs,'' to be published Tuesday by the United Nations Environmental Program, for the first time describes and maps every known reef and gives detailed evidence of the things that ail them.
