Window on Jordan: Beware! GAM officials are after Amman's shop signs, THE STAR

(Star) - ONE OF Amman's original characteristics, the motley colorful,
creative and bilingual store signs and billboards may soon be a thing of
the past. Greater Amman Municipality (GAM) latest war on shop window signs
around the capital threatens to make store signs dull and less adventurous.
But mostly, the stress on using Arabic names means that soon catchy foreign
brandnames like "grand store, sports land, quick meal" and others will
be unlawful! GAM officials say the new regulation, designed to standardize
shape and language of shop signs and billboards, is aimed at giving the
capital a more ordered look.
