CANBERRA, Sep. 17 (IPS) -- The Australian government today won
its latest legal battle to ensure the expulsion of 433 mostly
Afghan asylum seekers from Australian territorial waters, without
the need to first assess their applications for asylum.
Last week, a single federal court judge ruled that the
expulsion of refugees who had been held on a Norwegian container
ship since late August was illegal, and that they should be
returned to Australia.
But in the latest twist in the asylum seekers' saga, the full
bench of the Federal Court of Australia late today overturned the
earlier decision and upheld the appeal by the government.
