Gun Blast Shuts Alaska Pipeline
ANCHORAGE, Alaska (AP) -- A man fired a bullet into the trans-Alaska pipeline, causing the biggest oil spill in its 24-year history and forcing its shutdown, authorities said.
Daniel Carson Lewis, 37, was arrested Thursday, four hours after the leak was discovered, and charged with criminal mischief in the attack -- the first time the 4-foot-diameter steel pipeline has ever been pierced by a bullet.
State Police had no motive for the shooting but said Lewis has a long criminal record and had been drinking. ``It does not appear to be an act of terrorism,'' trooper spokesman Tim DeSpain said.
