Salvage crew begins moving Ehime Maru

HONOLULU, Oct 12, 2001 (United Press International via COMTEX) -- Salvage experts began lifting the wreck of the Ehime Maru off the bottom of the Pacific on Friday, a little more than eight months after the Japanese fisheries vessel was rammed and sunk by a U.S. submarine off Hawaii.

The salvage ship Rockwater 2 began lifting the 830-ton hulk from its resting place 2,000 feet below the surface early Friday and will slowly move it to shallow waters where divers will attempt to recover the remains of the nine crewmen and students who were lost when the Ehime Maru sank Feb. 9.
