Asylum Seekers Key in Australia Vote
MELBOURNE, Australia (AP) -- A Labor government would strike a deal with Indonesia to prevent boatloads of asylum seekers coming to Australia if it wins next month's federal election, opposition leader Kim Beazley said Saturday.
Beazley said Prime Minister John Howard's hardline policy of refusing asylum seekers entry to Australia was not deterring the people smugglers in Indonesia who organized their passage on rickety boats.
He said redirecting the boat people to other countries such as Papua New Guinea and Nauru, which have agreed to take them while their asylum applications are processed, was no solution either.
