Tuesday, October 23, 2001 -- More than 5,000 people around the world unable to get compatible bone marrow to cure their cancer or other serious diseases could be helped if there were enough tissue banks storing umbilical cord blood.

Now Israel has its own central umbilical cord blood bank, dedicated yesterday at Tel Hashomer by Magen David Adom in cooperation with the Israel Cancer Association. New mothers in most hospitals will be asked to donate their baby's umbilical cord.
