Heavy, persistent attacks by U.S. warplanes on targets near two key northern cities have ignited fighting between Taliban and opposition forces as they lay the groundwork for the expected battles for Kabul and Mazar-i-Sharif. As Washington slowly shifted its focus in the war to support for the anti-Taliban Northern Alliance, Britain said that all known camps of the Qaida militant group in Afghanistan had been destroyed. ''We believe that nine Al Qaida camps were occupied before the start of the military operation,'' Defense Secretary Geoff Hoon said. ''I can now tell you that we have successfully put all these camps out of action.'' ...
