Fed: Govt begins hard-sell on key election plank

CANBERRA, Oct 29 AAP - The coalition today began the hard-sell of its central re-election
plank of tax breaks for new parents, as Labor dismissed the $1.2 billion package as a
smoke and mirrors stunt.
With only 12 days left until the November 10 poll, Prime Minister John Howard promised
the coalition's family heartland the tax breaks would help them through the expensive
early years of parenthood.
"The people who are benefiting are people who are carrying the peak load of big mortgages
and family formation," he told the Nine Network.
