Doctor issues warning on blood clot agent

DURHAM, N.C., Oct 31, 2001 (United Press International via COMTEX) -- A Duke University surgeon is warning against overusing a popular blood clotting agent after research found it may trigger an abnormal immune system response.

Dr. Jeffrey Lawson, a surgeon and biochemist at Duke University, and colleagues reported their studies involving mice show the agent bovine thrombin potentially could cause an autoimmune response, where the body attacks its own tissue.
