Today is the 25th anniversary of the Great American Smokeout, a day
that encourages smokers to kick the habit for at least one day. A
retired high school guidance counselor in Massachusetts came up with
the idea, and the American Cancer Society made it an annual event.
When David Kessler headed the Food and Drug Administration, he declared
