Nobel Peace Prize laureates look back on a century of awards amid turmoil

The annual Nobel Peace Prize has been credited with spurring resolution of ongoing conflicts _ notably in Poland in 1983 and Northern Ireland in 1988 _ but the prestige of the award hasn't always proven such a successful catalyst.

This year, Nobel Peace Prize laureates Israeli Foreign Minister Shimon Peres and Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat did not attend ceremonies marking the award's 100th anniversary.

Professor Eric Hobshawn of the University of London noted their absence and questioned whether the coveted award was doing its job.
