NSW: Fed govt may buy air cranes to assist in firefighting

SYDNEY, Jan 2 AAP - The federal government will consider buying several Air-Crane helicopters to help battle bushfires, Prime Minister John Howard said today.

The massive helicopters, which can dump 9,000 litres of water at a time, have proven invaluable in containing fires that have destroyed huge areas of bushland in NSW since Christmas Day.

Mr Howard made the announcement while accompanying NSW Premier Bob Carr on a tour of fire-threatened areas in northern Sydney.
