PHOENIX — On balance, Donn Nelson’s close professional ties to the Phoenix Suns didn’t outweigh his feelings for his father.
After two days of talks with the Suns front office, Nelson resigned Friday to become Don Nelson’s successor as head coach of the Dallas Mavericks in the 2000-01 season.
Nelson Jr., 35, will be Dallas’ director of player personnel the rest of this season and an assistant coach the next two years. Nelson Sr. is expected to step aside for his son the next season and return to being a full-time general manager.
