A RUSH OF NEW GLOBAL macro hedge funds is coming to market after a
long dry spell. Actual numbers are hard to come by in this unregulated
arena, but the offerings reflect a shift in strategies. Global macro
funds, which make big bets on broad economic trends often with borrowed
money fell out of favor in the late 1990s when their performance
slipped and investors flocked to outsized returns from technology
stocks. Now, with the tech bubble burst, global macros are looking
attractive. According to the CSFB/Tremont Hedge Fund Index, they made
up the best-performing hedge fund category for the first 11 months
