Sinn Fein leader Gerry Adams is the second most popular political
leader among voters in the Irish Republic, an opinion poll found Friday.
The survey for The Irish Times newspaper said 56 percent of respondents
were "satisfied" with Adams' performance, placing him second only
to Prime Minister Bertie Ahern at 68 percent. Deputy prime minister
Mary Harney was virtually even with Adams at 54 percent.
It was the first time the poll had gauged the popularity in the Irish
Republic of Adams, who lives in British-ruled Northern Ireland and
represents West Belfast in the British Parliament.
