TAIPEI, Taiwan (AP) _ Stuck in a deep freeze for the past two years,
relations between Taiwan and China showed signs of a possible thaw
Friday as this island welcomed a goodwill gesture from Beijing.
The rare volley of kind words began Thursday when Chinese Vice Premier
Qian Qichen said that China was ready to stop shunning Taiwan's ruling
Democratic Progressive Party.
Since the DPP won Taiwan's presidential election in 2000, China has
refused to deal with the party, which has not endorsed Beijing's sacred
goal of unification. China and Taiwan split amid civil war in 1949.
