Dateline: PAARL, South Africa South African and the European Union officials toasted the signing of an agreement Monday to increase two-way trade in wines and spirits.

Under the agreement which took seven years to negotiate, South African wineries will be able to export 42 million liters (11 million gallons) of wine to Europe duty-free a year, a quota that may be increased by up to three percent annually.

The EU also agreed to give South Africa 15 million euro (dlrs 13 million) to restructure its wine and spirit industry.

European producers may export a small quantity of sparkling and high quality wines to South Africa duty free.
