An accounting error caused Canada's federal government to pay dlrs
3.3 billion Canadian (dlrs 2.1 billion U.S.) more than intended to
four provinces in recent years, the government said Tuesday.
The error detected in a computer system upgrade in December resulted
in the provinces of Ontario, Alberta, British Columbia and Manitoba
getting more tax money collected on their behalf by the federal government
than they should have.
Revenue Minister Elinor Caplan said the money was income taxes collected
by the federal government, then transferred to the provinces. She
said the federal government had yet to decide if it will ask for the
money back.
