BERLIN (AP) _ The number of unemployed Germans jumped to more than 4 million last month, the government announced Wednesday, stoking criticism of Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder's economic record ahead of September elections.

The jobless rate surged to 10.4 percent from 9.6 percent in December, with the total number out of work rising 326,000 to 4.29 million, the Federal Labor Office said.
