Opponents of a U.S. military training exercise aimed at helping local
forces wipe out a Muslim extremist group are un-Filipino and "Abu
Sayyaf lovers," President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo said Friday.
About 660 U.S. troops, including 160 from the Special Forces, will
be involved in the Balikatan, or "shoulder to shoulder," exercise
in the southern Philippines.
The Special Forces troops will be deployed with front-line Filipino
soldiers on Basilan island where the Abu Sayyaf, which has been linked
to Osama bin Laden's al-Qaida terror network, is holding an American
Christian missionary couple and a Filipino nurse. The ...
