How do you assess the growth of Vietnam's financial market since the
beginning
of Doi Moi? The financial markets experienced tentative growth in
the years
following the implementation of Doi Moi. The relatively slow pace
of deregulation
in the early years is understandable, given that the country needed
to
bridge a wide gap between the domestic financial system and that of
the
international markets.
When the urgency to narrow this gap came in the late 1990's, Vietnam
was hit with a problem that was not of its own doing: the Asian financial
crisis. Clearly as a result of this, policy-makers had to re-assess
and
ensure that further deregulation in the financial markets ...
