(Daily Californian) (U-WIRE) BERKELEY, Calif. -- After a 30-year struggle by student and community organizers, University of California-Berkeley may grant a faculty position for a Filipino-American studies professor.

The Academic Senate and executive budget committee are reviewing the request for the new position, and the push toward greater awareness and discussion of Filipino American studies at the university culminated in an all-day conference Saturday.

Though the Asian American studies program was formed in 1969 under the Ethnic Studies Department, students say a tenured faculty position for a professor of Filipino American Studies is long-overdue.
