IMF: Indonesia must start paying loans

SINGAPORE, Feb 13, 2002 (United Press International via COMTEX) -- International Monetary Fund officials Wednesday gave Indonesia a thumbs-up on its macroeconomic policies and a thumbs-down on its fiscal recovery prospects.

Indonesia's government must recover some of the $13 billion it spent to bail out former bank owners during the Asian financial crisis in 1997, IMF officials said in a statement. Indonesia also must recover more than $20 billion in bad loans local banks transferred to a government agency, if the country is to meet its 2002 budget targets with the IMF, officials said.
