DISTANCE learning is not new. Although Universiti Sains Malaysia has
been offering distance learning for about 25 years to thousands of local
students, it was not until recently that acquiring university degrees via
distance learning caught the public's eye.

While previously distance learning relied mainly on correspondence,
printed materials, audio and video tapes and radio broadcasts, today the
Internet is being used to support most of the interactive features of learning.

The Internet facilities most often considered for distance learning
are the World Wide Web, electronic mail (e-mail) and discussion groups.
