TACOMA -- From one of the worst to almost first.
Columbia River, a program that won only one dual meet two years
ago, returned to its proud past and finished third in the Class 3A
state wrestling tournament at Mat Classic XIV in the Tacoma Dome.
Third place isn't a championship, but it had a celebratory feel
to it for Columbia River, which won state team titles in 1969 and
1986.
The Chieftains were the darlings of the tournament, as Kyle Bounds,
Matt Vignali and Josh Fonokalafi won individual state titles to help
Columbia River amass 106 team points.
State championship or bust?
"This feels like heaven to me," Fonokalafi said.
