Fed: 60-40 rule can change if ALP reforms branches: Shorten

By Denis Peters, Industrial Correspondent

CANBERRA, Feb 20 AAP - Reforming the 60-40 rule in which unions dominate voting at ALP state conferences was not an insurmountable problem, Australian Workers' Union (AWU) boss Bill Shorten said today.

However, the focus on reform should not be on the specific percentage of votes but on improving the choice of candidates and ALP processes, the union leader said.

His comments come after federal Labor leader Simon Crean promised a review of the process in which unions can muster 60 per cent of the vote at conference compared to 40 per cent for ALP branches.
