Ireland's first electronic news channel went live on the Internet
Friday, with financial backers hoping to tap into the interest of
an estimated 70 million people of Irish descent worldwide.
And surprise, surprise: The top story on Ireland Live Television News
was its own launch.
"I warmly welcome the start-up of Ireland's first 24-hour news channel,
" Prime Minister Bertie Ahern said in an opening address to the camera.
"I wish it every success as a digital television service, which is
aimed at the global market," Ahern said. "Television has certainly
come a long way in my lifetime."
