Dateline: OTTAWA Canada's Supreme Court ruled Friday that the federal government has the right to enforce a ban on sales of pelts from hooded seal pups.

The 9-0 ruling upholds criminal charges filed in 1996 against 101 Newfoundland sealers for illegally selling the pelts, known as bluebacks. The suspects now face a trial on the charges under the Marine Mammal Regulations and could be fined if convicted.

"We fought the law and the law won," said Earle McCurdy, president of the Fish, Food and Allied Workers representing 20,000 members in Newfoundland and Labrador. "We still believe it's an unfair law."
