Vancouver's heart is in its rich history.
Sometimes this is forgotten in the rush of modern life.
Newcomers casually assume Vancouver is just another Portland suburb.
Historically, however, it's the other way around. In terms of
permanent settlement by Euro-Americans, Vancouver is at least 20 years
older than Portland.
In terms of human habitation, American Indians favored the hunting
and fishing grounds along the Columbia River to the heavily wooded
Willamette River shores where modern Portland grew up.
So, historically, Vancouver simply was first -- even if it's dwarfed
today by its big-sister city in Oregon.
