Once a heavily industrial economy, Clark County has become increasingly
reliant on service jobs as the county's population has grown.
That change is reflected in the 2002 list of top employers, which
now includes two health care organizations and four retailers.
The balance of the list is made up of high-tech companies Hewlett-
Packard, SEH America and WaferTech and the Camas paper mill, now
owned by Georgia-Pacific Corp.
All those businesses shed jobs in 2001 as the regional economy
cooled.
Three companies that were among the top employers at the start
of 2000, GST Telecommunications, Vanalco and AVX Corp., have gone
bankrupt or left Clark County ...
