Dateline: BEIJING On the day China announced a sharp increase in defense spending, its top diplomat insisted Wednesday that his country's key role in the world is promoting regional peace and stability _ and encouraging global development with its economic policies.

Foreign Minister Tang Jiaxuan also called on the United States to "match its words with deeds" when approaching Taiwan. But he said even that touchy issue _ which he called the most important point in U.S.-Chinese relations _ can be solved if both sides respect each other.

"We always adopt the policy of advising peace, stability and development, " Tang said at a news conference. ...
