Drug-coated stents keep blood flowing

ATLANTA, Mar 17, 2002 (United Press International via COMTEX) -- Heart researchers reported Sunday that an experimental technology in which coronary artery stents are coated with powerful drugs aimed at preventing the growth of scar tissue may eliminate stent failure, a complication that sends as many as 25 percent of heart patients back to the hospital for additional procedures.

More than a half-million Americans have stents placed every year - - Vice President Dick Cheney is one of the more famous stent patients -- and stent failure is a major complication.
