After a decade of growth and change, prosperity still lies on the
other side of the Columbia River.
That's where most of the metro area's jobs are. And they pay better,
too.
So every work day, close to one-third of the local work force
piles into cars and buses and heads to jobs in Oregon.
With an explosion of residential development during the 1990s,
Clark County saw its population shoot up by 45 percent. Meanwhile,
the number of county residents commuting to Oregon jobs increased
by 60 percent, from 36,676 in 1990 to an estimated 58,840 in 1999.
