Dateline: TOKYO The Tokyo stock market's main index edged up early Tuesday following weakness overnight on Wall Street. The U.S. dollar was higher against the yen.

The benchmark 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average gained 19.29 points, or 0.17 percent, to 11,280.38 in the first 30 minutes of trading. On Monday, the average fell 83.99 points, or 0.74 percent.

The dollar bought 133.34 yen in early morning, up 0.34 yen from late Monday in Tokyo and also above its late New York level of 133.30 yen overnight.

On the stock market, the Nikkei index posted slight gains, but trading remained light in the absence of major market-moving news.
