Dateline: WASHINGTON
Pentagon and Justice Department officials say they have not decided
the fate of an American-born man captured by U.S. forces in Afghanistan
but are preparing to move him to the United States.
The prisoner, Yasser Esam Hamdi, 22, was seized with fighters of the
former ruling Taliban militia and the al-Qaida terror network after
a November prison uprising in the northern Afghan town of Mazar-e-
Sharif.
Anticipating a Justice Department decision to confirm Hamdi's American
citizenship, the military was preparing to send a plane to the U.S.
Navy base at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, where Hamdi has been held with
299 other prisoners from the Afghan war.
