BOGOTA, Jan. 30 (IPS) -- Colombian novelist Gabriel Garcia
Marquez has been named by the prestigious British Broadcasting
Company (BBC) as the author of one of the 100 most important works
of the 20th century.
The decision, which went almost unreported in the Colombian
press, confirms the opinion that Garcia Marquez arguably is Latin
America's greatest living writer and, internationally, one of the
most widely-read.
The BBC puts Garcia Marquez among the greats of 20th century
contemporary literature, including such writers as Franz Kafka,
Anton Chekov, Marcel Proust, T.S. Eliot and Virginia Woolf.
