BEIJING, Feb. 2 (IPS) -- China has extended an olive branch to
Taiwan by saying the island need not recognize Beijing as the
central government before political negotiations start, but it
remains unclear where this latest offer will lead to.
This is not the first time China has called for a resumption of
cross-strait talks, which were suspended in 1995 after Beijing
angrily protested a high-profile visit by Taiwan President Lee Teng
Hui to the United States.
Still, Beijing's officials seem to be making extra efforts to
project a somewhat more conciliatory attitude in recent months.
