White House counselor Karen Hughes, perhaps President Bush's closest
adviser and certainly one of the most powerful female assistants to
any president, said today she is calling it quits in Washington sometime
this summer and heading back to Texas. She'll return with her husband
and teen-age son. Hughes is a former Dallas TV reporter who gave
up that career in 1994 to help George W. Bush during his years as
Texas governor. She's been with Mr. Bush ever since, aggressively
