(Brown Daily Herald) (U-WIRE) PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- The Latin American Studies Program finds itself in the unusual position of
having no exclusive, tenured faculty and of receiving half its funding through
a federal grant shared with three other universities.
Created in 1984, Latin American Studies was the first of Brown's area-studies
concentrations that would later grow to include South Asian and East Asian
studies. These courses of study were a reaction to the traditional domination
of Western European and American subject matter found in virtually all
institutions of higher learning in the United States until the 1970s.
