Fed: ACTU calls for govt to solve CSL Yarra dispute

MELBOURNE, May 2 AAP - The ACTU today called for the government to intervene in a dispute in which Australian sailors are refusing to lower their ship's gangplank fearing they will be replaced by a foreign crew.

The crew of the CSL Yarra, moored at Port Pirie in South Australia, are refusing to lower the gangplank for fear they will be sacked and replaced by cheaper Ukrainian workers.

An urgent appeal by the Maritime Union of Australia (MUA) will be heard by a full bench of the Federal Court in Sydney at 9.30am (AEST) today in a bid to resolve the dispute.
