Fed: Bad communication could be causing medical errors
A study has found medical staff at hospital emergency departments
are having to concentrate
on too many things at once and this could be causing clinical errors.
Professor ENRICO COIERA of the University of New South Wales says
multi-tasking and
constant interruptions are creating a communication traffic jam for
doctors.
He says this is creating a potent cocktail and a potential source
of error.
He's found the communication load occupies about 80 per cent of
clinicians' time, a
third of the load being taken up with interruptions.
